Summary

The Wexford Arts Centre is a cultural hub in Wexford Town, Ireland, providing a diverse range of arts events and exhibitions. In 2022, the Arts Centre underwent a major redevelopment project aimed at improving its existing infrastructure and enhancing its overall aesthetics. 

The main contractor for the project was McKelan Construction and Global Steel Manufacturing (GSM) were contracted to supply and fit all of the Architectural Corten elements of the project. Separately, Global Steel Manufacturing supplied and installed all of the internal and external handrails and railings.

The Corten steel elements, known for its durability and rust-like appearance, were profiled and fabricated by Global Steel Manufacturing using 3.0mm Corten. In total, an impressive 5 tonnes (approximately) of Corten were used in the project, which was installed between November 2022 and January 2023.

The project’s main challenge was the tight site constraints, which made delivery and installation of the Corten elements challenging. Coen Steel’s team worked closely with the main contractor to overcome this obstacle. Additionally, the Corten steel elements required hidden fixings throughout, which Coen Steel successfully incorporated into the design.

Challenges

The main challenge for the team was getting clear access to the site in such a confined area – deliveries, parking, etc. being particularly tricky.

End Results

Delivered on time and within budget under notable constraints.
