Unveiled in July 2023, “The Fisherman” sculpture stands proudly on the banks of the River Inny in Ballymahon, Co. Longford. Commissioned by the Ballymahon Municipal District and supported by Tidy Towns and the local Traders Group, the piece celebrates the town’s strong fishing heritage. Artist Liam Kavanagh of Cruach Design used 3mm Corten steel to create the striking low-poly figure, incorporating a stainless-steel fishing rod. Corten was selected for its natural rusted appearance, weather resistance, and sustainability. Coen Steel supplied the material, which was precision-cut for the complex design. The project was completed on time and within budget.
The sculpture was delivered on time and within budget and now serves as a cultural and visual landmark in Ballymahon. It contributes to the town’s identity and tourism offering while requiring minimal upkeep.
“This piece is not just art — it’s a nod to our heritage. The use of Corten makes it both visually compelling and built to last. We’re proud to have something so unique in the heart of Ballymahon.” — Pat O’Toole, Local Councillor
“The Corten steel allowed me to bring warmth and permanence to the sculpture, while keeping the sharp lines and texture I wanted.” — Liam Kavanagh, Artist & Fabricator
