Coen Steel supplied high-performance Corten weathering steel for a custom pedestrian and cycle bridge on Cootes Lane in Kilkenny City. Commissioned by Kilkenny County Council as part of their Active Travel Scheme, the project aimed to create a durable, low-maintenance structure that would enhance both functionality and aesthetics. Corten was selected over standard steel for its 100-year lifespan and sustainable profile—requiring no painting or galvanising. This significantly reduced long-term environmental impact and costs. Despite access limitations and a tight timeline, the bridge was successfully completed on time and within budget, standing as a showcase of engineering efficiency and material excellence´.

End Results

The bridge was delivered on time and within budget, with Corten meeting both performance and aesthetic goals. The finished structure is robust, visually distinctive, and environmentally aligned with modern infrastructure standards.

Challenges Overcome:

  • Time Constraints: Tight delivery schedule met through phased supply
  • Site Access: Narrow lane access required coordinated logistics
  • Design Complexity: Precision pre-fabrication allowed for seamless installation without on-site welding

Quotes/Feedback from Clients on the Project:

“This project was our first time working with Corten steel, and we relied heavily on Coen Steel’s knowledge to get it right. From welding advice to surface finishing, their input was key to making sure the bridge would last for decades without the usual maintenance. It’s great to partner with experts who understand the material inside and out.”
