Completed and exhibited in September 2023 (Project duration: approximately 7 months)
Unveiled at the National Ploughing Championships, Bóanna is a life-size sculpture of an Irish Heritage Dexter cow, created by Liam Kavanagh of Cruach Design. Fabricated from over 1,000 individually cut components, the sculpture celebrates Ireland’s agricultural legacy and native cattle breeds. Coen Steel supplied the 2 mm Corten A weathering steel sheets used to bring the sculpture to life. Chosen for its natural oxidising surface, low maintenance, and long lifespan, the Corten steel provided the perfect material for a durable outdoor installation. Completed over a 7-month period, the piece became a centrepiece of the event and a symbol of rural pride.
Bóanna was completed on schedule and became one of the most talked-about installations at the Ploughing Championships. With its rich rusted patina and strong silhouette, the sculpture stands as a visually powerful tribute to Ireland’s rural traditions. The use of Corten steel ensures durability with minimal upkeep, ideal for public display in all weather. ________________________________
